Land Acknowledgement
The Black Medical Students Association of Canada (BMSAC) acknowledges that our organization operates across the lands of Turtle Island, a place known as Canada to many. From coast to coast, we recognize that we are living and working on the unceded territories of Indigenous peoples and their communities. As an organization, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous peoples, who are the original stewards of this land, and acknowledge that our struggles for freedom are intertwined. We also recognize the importance of honouring Indigenous history and the respect it deserves in all work carried out on these lands. The BMSAC is committed to supporting reconciliation efforts, guided by the principles of truth and justice.

Our Regions
BMSAC is divided into four regions, the Western Region, Atlantic Region, Quebec Region and the Ontario Region. Here are some messages from our different regional directors:
Why study in the Western Region?
Western Canada covers nearly 30% of the country, so there's truly something for everyone! From British Columbia's Pacific coastline and Rocky Mountain peaks to Alberta's Banff National Park and the open prairies of Saskatchewan and Manitoba, the region offers endless outdoor space. Along with that vast landscape comes a wide range of cultures and delicious food. As a medical student, being able to get a breath of fresh air, spend time outdoors, and enjoy a great meal is a valuable form of stress relief. Academically, we are now home to 6 medical schools with numerous satellite sites offering hands-on rural and remote training alongside strong research opportunities. Whether you're drawn to a bustling city or a smaller, close-knit community, Western Canada has a program and a lifestyle to match!
Why study in Atlantic Canada?
We have the nicest people in Canada (speaking from experience 😉), little traffic, short commutes, beautiful scenery, amazing seafood, and plenty of cute cafés to study in. You’re never far from the ocean or a hiking trail when you need to escape those med-school-induced existential crises. There’s also rich history, including Halifax’s Titanic connections, and fun fact: Atlantic Canada is home to the world’s highest tides, so you can literally walk on the ocean floor! Plus, there’s a supportive Black medical student community and endless road-trip destinations to explore.
Why study medicine in Quebec?
Quebec offers the best of both worlds: a bilingual medical journey immersed in French, English, and rich cultural diversity! From vibrant Montréal to beautiful Québec City and welcoming Sherbrooke, you’ll discover unique communities, experiences, and opportunities at every step. With a growing and supportive Black physician and medical student community, Quebec is a place where you can truly find your people, grow, and thrive.
Why study in Ontario?
Ontario not only features the nations capital but is known to have the highest concentration of universities in Canada including the highest number of medical schools, with a new one opening in 2028. We also have the highest number of hospitals in Canada that provide plenty of opportunities for medical students to study and explore different specialties. Over 200 languages are spoken across the province, which allows students to experience a globally diverse campus life. We have the largest natural skating rink, aka the Rideau Canal, which is located in Ottawa. We also feature 4 of the 5 Great Lakes, including the iconic Lake Ontario! With such a diverse population, Ontario is not only a great place to study but also an amazing place to call home :)
